August 2010 Around the House

All these other blog posts will make it sound like we've had a cold or cloudy summer, but we've actually had good weather and the kids have spent a lot of time outside in the sprinklers or on their homemade slip-n-slide.... it was nice to have a few weeks this last month to just hang out around the house...

I finally bought a sprinkler... but it has been used mainly for play time as you can tell by the yellow grass.

The chickens doing some bug control in the garden... just wish we could teach them to do weeding!

Sad to lose our extra long days (for most of the summer, it doesn't get dark until 10pm)... but its also nice to have a reason to come inside and wind down before bedtime.

Lots of picking and gathering this month too. Here is some of our 60 pound pick of organic blueberries. We've also been picking a ton of wild blackberries, but they usually get eaten before we have time to freeze them.

Here's the homemade slip-n-slide, which has gotten much use this month. It worked pretty well once we added some lubricating dish soap.

Cam also discovered he could scale the walls in the hallway.

He decided that this is as high as he likes to go now... it's hard to get down when you go all the way up to the ceiling.
The kids have also LOVED playing with the kitten, who is a great, playful and nice cat. I never thought I'd say nice things about a pet cat, but Legotron is perfect for us. Plus, she's an outdoor cat so I don't have to smell her... and with these pregnancy hormones, I smell everything these days, especially the fridge full of fresh crab that Jonah's been catching this month... love the crab but that smell is WOW.

What a wild and wonderful place to live! I've always said that what kids need most (well almost) is unorganized space and time. Looks as though they've filled it magnificently with creativity! Love the old car in the background!
